Indian Rupee Symbol using Windows Fonts

The India Rupee symbol is now part of the official Unicode standard but for you to type that new currency sign into your favorite word processor or spreadsheet using a regular keyboard, your existing fonts must be updated to the new standard as well.

Microsoft has recently updated all the common fonts the ship with Windows to include support for the new Indian Rupee symbol. Now you can open a document inside Microsoft Word (or notepad), select a popular font family like Arial or Times New Roman, and type the Rupee sign directly.

Update your existing Windows fonts by installing the kb2496898 hotfix available for both Windows Vista and Windows 7. Once installed, this will update the Arial.ttf, Times.ttf, Tahoma.ttf and some of the other font files on your computer with the latest version.

How to Type the Indian Rupee Symbol using Arial

Launch Microsoft Word, change the document font to Arial or Tahoma, and type 20B9 followed by Alt-x. If the 20b9 string is converted into a Rupee symbol, as in the screenshot above, the update has been successfully applied.

Extend Vista

1) Extend Vista using "slmgr -rearm" method. When you have 1 day remaining to activiate, Go to CommandPrompt & Make sure to press Ctrl + Alt + Enter to access it in Administratve mode.
2) Then type slmgr -rearm and press Enter. In about 45 seconds, you will be prompted to restart your computer. After that, you have succesfully resetted the activation timer to 30 days. This will only work 3 times, giving you 120 days, but… we’re about to change that.
3) Open the registry editor by clicking the Start Pearl and typing regedit in the Search bar.
4) Navigate to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE \ SOFTWARE \ Microsoft \ Windows NT \ Currentversion \ SL
5) Right click SkipRearm and modify the value to 1.
6) Click on the Start Pearl and type cmd in the Search bar to access the command Prompt. Make sure you press Ctrl+Alt+Enter to run it in Administrative Mode.
7) Once in Command Prompt, type slmgr -rearm like you would when extending Vista by 30 days. Now you can use Rearm 8 more times, giving you a total of 360 days.

In Windows Vista there is a Built-in Administrator Account in addition to your normal Administrator account that was created. The Built-in Administrator Account is disabled by default.

Certain Programs/Softwares give us trouble in proper installation due to this disable. Even though we run the .exe file of the programs that is to be installed as "Run As Administrator". For proper installation of the programs it is to be enabled.

• Click Start, and type “secpol.msc” in the search area and click Enter.
• You may receive a prompt from UAC, approve/login and proceed.
• In the left list, choose “Local Policies”, then “Security Options”
• Set “Accounts: Administrator account status” to Enabled.
• Set “User Account Control: Admin Approval Mode for the Built-in Administrator account” to Disabled.
• Now log-off, and you’ll see a new account named “Administrator” will be available, click on it to login.

Log on to this administrator account. You may delete other user accounts.

Tricking Notepad

Here's a really funny way to break Notepad.

This actually works. It will not crash your computer, it just breaks Notepad in that it causes it to display very oddly. No permnent damage comes of the following steps.

1. Open up Notepad (not Wordpad, not Word or any other word processor)
2. Type in this sentence exactly (without quotes): "this app can break"
3. Save the file to your hard drive.
4. Close Notepad
5. Open the saved file by double clicking it.

Instead of seeing your sentence, you should see a series of squares. For whatever reason, Notepad can't figure out what to do with that series of characters and breaks

Explanation: In notepad, any other 4-3-3-5 letter word combo will have the same results.
It is all to do with a limitation in Windows. Text files containing Unicode UTF-16-encoded Unicode are supposed to start with a "Byte-Order Mark" (BOM), which is a two-byte flag that tells a reader how the following UTF-16 data is encoded.

The reason this happens:

1) You are saving to 8-bit Extended ASCII (Look at the Save As / Encoding format)

2) You are reading from 16-bit UNICODE (You guessed it, look at the Save As / Encoding format)

This is why the 18 8-bit characters are being displayed as 9 (obviously not supported by your codepage) 16-bit UNICODE

Steps that can make your Linux system boot faster.

Step 1 :
Decide on the unnecessary services and stop them. Try to stop them using the following commands :

chkconfig ip6tables off

chkconfig sendmail off
chkconfig yum-updatesd off

Step 2 :
If the loop-back device is not needed, stop it to save 1 second . Add
ONBOOT=no in its ifcfg file.

Step 3 :
* Kill all splash screens,
* Grub splash (the line that has 'splash image' should be commented in grub.conf),
* Boot splash (edit/ etc/ sysconfig/ init and say No color there) and
* KDE splash (goto the control center and stop it ).

Normally kernel has lots of unnecessary modules that get loaded when the machine starts. Even if you use only the Ethernet, but still the kernel loads the wireless, Blue tooth and router related modules. Disable them or recompile the kernel.

This should save you more than 30 seconds each time u boot your machine. You can tweak your system as per your requirements & save some boot time.

There’s a new kind of ‘scam’ on Facebook that won’t do you any harm but it is likely to embarrass you in public. I have lately seen some of my tech-savvy friends on Facebook fall for such scams and you should be careful as well.

Working of Scam: You land on a unsuspecting Facebook page and there’s a pop-up saying that you need to confirm that you are an adult in order to view the underlying content. You click confirm and the dialog disappears.

Actual Working: The problem is that the ‘pop-up’ you just clicked was not actually a pop-up but some sort of a hidden script that executes itself as soon as you hit the ‘Confirm’ button.

The script, in most cases, will automatically post a link on your Facebook wall thus broadcasting to the world that you just tried visiting an ‘adult’ site. This will almost create a viral effect because now your other friends will be eager to see that page and some of them may fall in the trap as well.

Google Realtime Search was only a section of Google's search sidebar that allows you to restrict the results to Twitter, Facebook, Google Buzz and other sites where you can post public updates. Now it's a full-fledged service that has a homepage, a logo and a name.

Even if Google Realtime's homepage is at google.com/realtime, you'll miss two important new features if you don't go to this special URL: filtering results by location and showing the context of a message using a conversation view.

Restrict search results to a location to find out what people from a certain place think about a topic. "You can use geographic refinements to find updates and news near you, or in a region you specify. So if you're traveling to 'Moscow' this summer, you can check out tweets from 'Muscovites' to get ideas for activities happening right where you are," suggests Google.

If one of the search results is part of a conversation, Google shows a link to the full conversation. "Often a single tweet sparks a larger conversation of re-tweets and other replies, but to put it together you have to click through a bunch of links and figure it out yourself. With the new full conversation feature, you can browse the entire conversation in a single glance."

Google also added a new feature to Google Alerts: updates, which is another name for realtime results. It's not a good idea to choose the "as-it-happens" option because you'll receive a lot of email alerts.

Since the Undo Send feature is part of Gmail Labs, you’ll have to navigate to the Gmail Labs page to activate it. Load up Gmail (Gmail) and look in the top-right corner of the page. Between your e-mail address and Settings you’ll see the green Labs icon.

By default, Gmail gives you a 10-second window of time in which you may undo a sent e-mail. You can change that to five, 20 or 30 seconds by going to Settings.

Gmail has always had an excellent spam filter that keeps junk messages out of your Inbox. Google added a reverse feature that is quite unique to Gmail – it’s called the Priority Inbox.

Priority Inbox is like having a personal secretary whose job is to sort your incoming mail based on importance. She knows about your friends, your colleagues and other people with whom you interact regularly and can therefore categorize your email accordingly.

Priority Inbox is something similar – it’s an intelligent, self-learning filter that automatically puts your most important email messages at the top of your Inbox so that you may deal with them first. The feature is now live for both Gmail and Google Apps email accounts.

Priority Inbox splits your inbox into three sections: Important and unread, Starred, and Everything else. Messages are automatically categorized as they arrive in your inbox. Gmail uses a variety of signals to predict which messages are important, including the people you email most and which messages you open and reply to. Google takes into account implicit signals like: the messages from people you frequently email are important, if a message includes words frequently used in other messages you usually read then it's probably important, the messages you star are probably more important than the messages you archive without opening.

Note: Gmail uses the "important" label to classify messages, so that's the reason why you can't create a label named "important".

Manage EXIF Data of your Images

Most digital camera record and save EXIF data with every photograph. Learn about tools that can help you view and edit Exif tags of your photographs.

The information that is recorded by the camera into the photograph may include details about the camera model itself, the lens that was used, shutter speed, aperture, focal length and so on. Some modern digital cameras and camera phones are GPS enabled and they can therefore save even the location co-ordinates (latitude and longitude) with the photographs.

All this “metadata” is embedded into photographs using the standard Exif format that can easily be read by most image editing programs as well as online photo sharing websites like Flickr and Picasa Web Albums.

View Exif Data of Images

If you are impressed by a photograph and would like to know more about the camera make and the lens settings that were used when capturing that picture, here’s what you can do do.

Go to Jeffrey’s Exif Viewer and upload the photograph (or if you found the picture on the web, simply copy-paste the image URL). The tool will create a nice summary of all the meta data stored in that photograph along with the location information (see example).

Alternatively, you may use Google’s Picasa, Windows Live Photo Gallery, or any other photo viewer programs to display Exif data from photographs on your desktop.

Edit Exif Data in Photographs

If the internal date of your camera was incorrect and therefore all the pictures were captured with a wrong timestamp. Or you want to add your name to the photograph’s metadata so that people immediately know who the owner is. WIth an Exif editor, you can also geo-tag your photographs manually even if your camera doesn’t have GPS.

You may be a bit surprised but Windows Explorer is actually a wonderful Exif editor. Just right click any image file, choose Properties and click the Details tab. You can now edit a wide range of metadata associated with that image from the camera model to the shooting date to copyright information and more.

Windows Explorer won’t let you edit GPS related information of photographs but Google’s Picasa software is a good choice for doing that.

Finally, if you want to change the Exif data in tons of photographs, you can edit them all in one go using a dedicated Exif editors like Geosetter or Microsoft Pro Photo. Geosetter can pull Exif tags from one photograph and apply them to all your other photos while Pro Photo is more suited for geo-tagging pictures.

Similar stuff can also be done with the help of command like utilities like jHead and ExifTool – these are very powerful tools but implementation is obviously a bit geeky.

Remove Metadata from Photographs

Sometimes the Exif data of your photographs may reveal more than what you would expect. It may therefore sometimes sense to strip your images of all the meta information before uploading them to the web.

To remove all the metadata from a photograph, just right-click the files inside Windows Explorer and choose Properties. Now click the Details tab and select the option that says “Remove Properties and Personal Information.”

Choose “Remove the follow properties from this file” followed by “Select All” and click OK. All the private metadata tags are now erased from the photograph.

Step 1: Create a dummy web page on an external website like Webs or Weebly. Make sure you don’t share the web address (URL) of that page with anyone else in world.

Step 2: Goto sitemeter.com or statcounter.com (or any web statistics program) and generate a tracking code for the web page created in the previous step. Copy-paste the tracking code in your web page.

Obviously there are two drawbacks associated with the original idea. The PDF conversion process is not real time and second, you need access to a public web server where you can upload the PDF images so that Google bots can find them.

If you aren’t willing to wait that long and need to perform instant OCR without downloading any of the software tools, try OCR Terminal – it’s an online Optical Character Recognition service where you can upload scanned images, multi-page PDF documents or even screenshots and convert them into searchable text documents.

Copy the File’s Location to the Clipboard

Open Windows Explorer and navigate to the file or folder whose path you want to copy to the clipboard. Once you are there, hold the “Shift” key and right click that file or folder’s icon.

Because the Shift key is down, the contextual menu will have a new item that says “Copy as Path” – select that and the full location of the file or the folder will get saved to your clipboard from where you can paste it anywhere including the DOS window.

Microsoft Word has a handy feature for manipulating shapes and graphics in documents. When you've placed multiple graphical elements, you can group them so they stay together when you move them and remain the same relative size when you resize them.
But in Word 2007 this feature seems not to work. You can't select multiple graphical items, so there's no way to group them or determine which overlapping objects are in front of which others. !

It turns out that in Word 2007, there's an extra step. Before you start adding graphics you have to define a "Canvas" to hold them.
Click Insert -> Shapes -> New Drawing Canvas.
Add your pictures and shapes to the drawing canvas. Now you can group them, ungroup them, put one behind another, and so on—all the actions that you were accustomed to in Word 2003.

Why you should backup Gmail to the cloud?

If you are not a huge fan of desktop applications or if you think that setting up a Gmail backup plan involves way too much effort, you can consider creating a backup of your Gmail account in the cloud itself. Before we get into the details, here are three situations where an online backup of Gmail messages will come handy:

Reason #1 – If your main Gmail account gets hacked, you will still have access to all your previous emails.

Reason #2 – If you delete an important email from your Gmail Inbox by mistake, you can easily retrieve it from the online backup. Google Apps Premier has Postini to restore deleted emails, here you’re getting that facility for free.

Reason #3 – If the Gmail service goes down, you will still be able to read your older emails. Gmail outage won’t affect work.

Backup your Gmail Messages Online

There are three services that can help you automatically backup your Gmail (and Google Apps) email accounts online.

The first and most obvious choice is Gmail. Create a new Gmail account and under Settings –> Accounts and Import –> Check mail using POP3 –> Add POP3 email account, enter the email address of your main Gmail account that you want to backup.

Within an hour or so, the online mail fetcher program will pull messages from your main Gmail account and will copy them to your new “backup” account. In my limited testing, I found that Gmail’s mail fetcher left all the messages that were either “read” or have been previously downloaded by another POP3 client so it’s not “true backup.”

That brings us to another alternative – copy your Gmail mailbox to Windows Live Hotmail. While you can add a Gmail account to Hotmail using POP3 (just like Gmail’s mail fetcher), there’s a much better and reliable option out there for copying emails from Gmail into Hotmail and it’s called TrueSwitch.

Setup a new Hotmail account and TrueSwitch, an awesome web-based email account migration service, will copy all your emails and attachments from Gmail to your new Hotmail address. If you have a relatively large Gmail Inbox, the backup process might take up to 24 hours but you’ll get an email as soon as the transfer is complete.

Like Gmail, Hotmail too offers “expanding” storage so it can possibly fit your large Google inbox as well. You can then add your Gmail address to Hotmail (click “Add an email account” in the sidebar) and this will ensure that new messages that land in your Gmail inbox in the future are also saved in Hotmail.

That said, both the services discussed above have one common drawback – they’ll always backup your entire Gmail mailbox and you cannot limit the backup process to a specific set of folders (or labels in Gmail). So if you have a fairly large mailbox and don’t want to backup each and every Gmail folder (or label), try Backupify.

Backupify, can backup your online accounts (including Gmail) to Amazon S3 and a unique point about Backupify is that it lets you specify labels that should be included in the backup process. The messages are stored in the cloud as EML files that you can view inside Outlook or, you can change the .eml extension to .mht, and read the file inside IE.

NOTE: Some times there are chances where in the file transfer gets encrypted (takes place via yahoo server itself).So in this case the above hack may fail to work.

The only thing is that you must have had System Restore enabled and that you need to remember your previous password.
If this applies, then Insert your Vista installation DVD into your drive and reboot. Start the installation process and designate the system language, the time, and your keyboard format.

At this point the option Repair your PC will pop up, so select that and click Next.
Now select the System Restore option and again click Next. Select the restore point you'd like to use, confirm your selection, and click Finish, then Yes when it's time to restart.
Once the system restarts, close the System Restore process and log on using your older Password.

You may have lost a little bit of data, but the Hack works pretty well.

Note: You can even get the lost data, if your backup process runs often enough you should be able to restore that from your NAS or server.

If you are worried that some programs on your PC are secretly making connections to websites in the background, here's a quick tip that uses a simple DOS command to detect and prevent such suspicious activity:

1. Type cmd in your Windows Run box.

2. Type netstat -b 5 > activity.txt and press Enter. After 2 minutes, press Ctrl+C.

3. Type activity.txt on the command line to open the log file in Notepad.

The file activity.txt will have a log of all process that made a connection to the Internet in the last two minutes. It will also show which process connected to which website in this time. And not just the web browsers (like iexplore.exe or opera.exe), the log will also show your IM clients, download managers, email programs or any software that requires a net connection.

Scroll though the activity.txt file and look for any process names or website addresses that you are not aware of.
If you track one , go to the Task Manager (or Process Explorer) to find the location of the executable file on your computer and eliminate the threat.

Use this for a perfect account-migration from XP to Ubuntu. You might be required to re-enter a users mail password for most programs, otherwise, all their messages/accounts/mailbox settings will be migrated.

1. Install Thunderbird on XP

2. Use the ThunderBird to import the Outlook profiles.
Thunderbird and most open-source mail applications use or recognise a standard arrangement of folder/files, importing to Thunderbird sets this up for you.

3. Copy all the files in %AppData%\Thunderbird\Profiles\xxxxxxxx.default\
Where %AppData% can be found by typing %AppData% into the windows command-line. Usually AppData can be found in the desired users "Documents and Settings" folder, then "Application Data" or "Roaming" folders. xxxxxxxxx is a string of random characters.

4. Paste these files into a removable drive, or somewhere you can find when you reboot into *buntu. Additionally, if you can find this folder in *buntu, then you don't need to copy it, just open it in *buntu.

5. Install Thunderbird in *buntu if not already installed.

6. Find the ~/.thunderbird/xxxxxxxx.default/ folder.
Where ~ is your own home folder, most file-managers such as Dolphin or Nautilus have dedicated home buttons. You might need to find the setting to show hidden files, as .thunderbird is hidden. You may also type it into the navigation bar. xxxxxxxxx is again, random characters.

7. Copy the folder, and paste it in the same folder, name the new folder xxxxxxxx.default.bk
This is just a backup folder, in case anything goes horribly wrong, just delete xxxxxxx.default and then remove the ".bk" from the folder you just made if things don't work.

8. Find the previous files you copied/located. Copy everything from the original xxxxxxx.default folder into the new xxxxxxx.default folder, if asked, overwrite everything.

9. Open Thunderbird, it should now have all your messages and account settings! You might be asked for your mail password when you first open Thunderbird.

10. If you prefer other programs, open the program you prefer to use, and find the import features to import your account settings (very much like we imported the outlook account into thunderbird); importing to Kmail is under the "Import Messages" option.

There are some lesser-known features in Bing that aren’t just useful, you won’t find them in any of the other popular search engines.

1. Watch Video Preview in Search Results
When you hover the mouse over any of the thumbnail images appearing in Bing Video Search, it will automatically play a short preview of the video so you have a good idea about the clip without visiting the target website where that video is hosted.

As you may have noticed in the screencast above, this video preview feature is available for all clip indexed by Live Search whether they are on YouTube, MySpace, CNN or ABC News.

2. Find Web Pages That Link to Documents, MP3s, Videos, ZIPs ..
The contains: operator is Bing Search lets you find web pages that link to other online documents and multimedia files like music and video. This is very different from Google’s filetype: search operator (also available in Live Search) which looks for content inside PDF and Office documents.

1) Open PowerPoint 2007

2) Make sure you can see the Developer tab in the “Ribbon”. If you can’t, click on the Office menu (The circle button in the top left hand corner), then click on PowerPoint Options, and make sure that you check the Show Developer tab in the Ribbon box.

3) Go to the slide you want the .swf file to appear

4) Click on the Developer tab in the Ribbon

5) Look for the More Controls button in the controls group. It is the one with a spanner and a hammer with three dots underneath it. Once you find it – click on it

6) The More Controls box will appear. Scroll down until you find Shockwave Flash Object. Click on that, then click OK

7) You will notice your cursor is now a cross, and no longer an arrow. That means you can now draw where you want your Shockwave/Flash file to appear on your slide. Autocorrect options allows Word 2007 users to control how their computer automatically inserts text into a document. Users can specify custom text replacment where a simple combination of character would insert a generic sentence into a document or comment box.

To use Autocorrect options: Click Office Button, then Word Options, select Proofing from the left side, then click Autocorrect Options

Once on the Autocorrect screen, there are two columns on the bottom, one for a string of text (orange box) and another with the text to replace (green box). In a document, when you type the the text in the orange box, it will be replaced with the text from the green box. When finished, make sure to click the Add button so your string is saved.

Avast.com currently offers a free Avast download for Ubuntu. Unfortunately they only provide a deb package for 32-bit systems. Avast actually runs quite well on a 64-bit system, but the installation requires a few extra steps. This guide will walk you through the process of installing Avast on a 64-bit system.

1. Install the ia32-libs package if it's not already installed.

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

The ia32-libs package must be >= 2.2ubuntu18.

2. Download the Avast debian package here and save it to your desktop. The instructions below assume that the avast package can be found on your desktop so it's important that you choose your desktop as the download location.

3. After it's downloaded change to your desktop folder.

cd /home/YourUserName/Desktop

4. Install the avast deb package.

sudo dpkg --force-architecture -i avast4workstation_1.3.0-2_i386.deb

5. You need to make sure that all of the required libraries can be found in your /usr/lib32 folder. To help simplify this task I've created a libs package for avast and attached it to this post. Simply download the attachment and then type the following:

sudo dpkg -i ia32-avast-libs.deb

6. After the packages are installed make sure that all of the required libraries can be found. Type the following:

ldd /usr/lib/avast4workstation/bin/avastgui
ldd /usr/lib/avast4workstation/bin/avast

7. Scroll through both lists and make sure that none of them say 'Not found'. As long as you didn't find any libraries listed as 'not found' then you should now be able to run Avast from your Applications menu.

Library Not Found
If any say not found then you may need to install additional packages or as a last resort manually extract the libraries from a package into your /usr/lib32 folder. You can do a package contents search here. Just enter the name of the missing library and search for a package that contains it. Once you've found the package download the i386 version and use file-roller to extract the missing library into your /usr/lib32 folder.

To uninstall this package simply type the following:
sudo apt-get remove avast4workstation

Wink is a great program for creating video tutorials through the use of flash animation. You can take screen captures with Wink either on-demand or on a time-delay basis and then compile those screenshots into a swf file for use in a web page. You can also add explanation boxes, buttons and titles to your presentations. If you're looking for an easy way to create a video tutorial on how to use certain software applications or perhaps even a website then you definitely want to check out Wink. Unfortunately the wink package available in the Ubuntu repository is only available for the 32-bit architecture so this guide will walk you through installing it on the 64-bit version of Ubuntu.

1.First off you'll need to install the following package.

sudo apt-get install ia32-libs

2.The next step is to download the Wink package. Click here for a list of download locations.. Select one of the listed mirrors and save the file to your desktop.

3.Open your terminal and type the following:

cd /home/[YourUserName]/Desktop
dpkg-deb --extract wink_1.5.1060-6_i386.deb wink
dpkg-deb --control wink_1.5.1060-6_i386.deb wink/DEBIAN

8.Find the line that begins with "Icon=" and replace "wink" with "/usr/share/pixmaps/wink.xpm". This step ensures that the correct icon will appear on your Applications > Graphics menu.

10.The wink package requires that the libexpat.so.0 file be installed in your /usr/lib32 folder. Type the following.

11.Type the following to build the package.

dpkg-deb --build wink

12.Click on the new wink.deb package to install it or type the following.

13.Before running the program for the first time you need to make sure that all required libraries are installed. After you install the newly created package type the following:

ldd /usr/lib/wink/wink

14.If none of the libraries say "not found" then you should now be able to open wink from the Applications > Graphics menu.

Note: If any libraries are listed as not found then you may need to install additional packages or as a last resort manually extract the files from a package into your /usr/lib32 directory. You can search the Ubuntu repository for the name of the missing library. Click here to use the "Package Contents" search.. Enter the name of the library you are missing and search for a package that contains it. You’ll see a dialog that asks you if you agree with the DLJ license terms. Select Yes, and hit Enter; the JRE will finish installing.

Aftermath:

First, check that the JRE is properly installed by running the following command from a terminal.

Getting rid of Residual Config packages - In Synaptic Package Manger, there is a built-in feature that gets rid of old Residual Config packages. Residual Config packages are usually dependency packages that are left behind after you uninstall a package from your machine. To use this feature, go to System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager. On the bottom left hand corner of the window, click the Status button. In the list above the Sections, Status, Search, and Custom buttons, you should see the following text:

Installed
Installed (local or obsolete)
Not installed
Residual config

Click on the "Residual config" text. (If the "Residual config dialogue does not appear, that means you do not have any Residual Config packages on your machine and you can skip down to Tip #2.) Do you see the packages that popped up in the window on the right? Those are the Residual Config packages. To get rid of these pests, click on the box to the left of the package name and select "Mark for Complete Removal". After you have done that for all of the Residual Config packages, look at the top of the Synaptic Package Manger window. Do you see the green check mark with the text "Apply" right under it? Click that button, and you'll flush all those Residual Config packages

Getting rid of partial packages - This is yet another built-in feature, but this time it is not used in Synaptic Package Manager. It is used in the Terminal. To access the Terminal, go to Applications > Accessories > Terminal. Now, in the Terminal, key in the following command (or you can just copy and paste from here)

sudo apt-get autoclean

Enter your password when prompted and press Enter. See the package names that appeared in the Terminal? Those were partial packages that have just been deleted. This command deletes the not-so-fully-downloaded packages that you acquire when a package that is being downloaded is suddenly cancelled.

Getting rid of unnecessary locale data - For this tip, you need to download the "localepurge" package found in Synaptic Package Manager. "localepurge" is just a simple script to recover diskspace wasted for unneeded locale files and localized man pages. It will automagically be invoked upon completion of any apt installation run.

To open Synaptic Package Manager, follow the instructions in Tip #1. After opening up Synaptic Package Manager, click the Sections button on the bottom left hand corner of the window, if it is not already clicked. Next, at the top of the Synaptic Package Manager window, click the Search button. In the search window, key in the following text :

localepurge

Did the "localepurge" package popup in the package window? It probably did, unless you do not have the correct Repositories. Now, click on the box next to the "localepurge" package name. Click on Mark for Installation. Now click the Apply button at the top of the window and wait for the downloading and installing of the "localepurge" package to finish. Once it is done, a new window should popup that has a bunch of abbreviations on it. for example:

Select en. Then click next.

Getting rid of "orphaned" packages - For this tip, you need to download the "deborphan" package found in Synaptic Package Manager. "deborphan" finds "orphaned" packages on your system. It determines which packages have no other packages depending on their installation, and shows you a list of these packages. It is most useful when finding libraries, but it can be used on packages in all sections.

To open Synaptic Package Manager, follow the instructions in Tip #1. After opening up Synaptic Package Manager, click the Sections button on the bottom left hand corner of the window, if it is not already clicked. Next, at the top of the Synaptic Package Manager window, click the Search button. In the search window, key in the following text :

deborphan

How to pick between Debian & Ubuntu

Many new folks wonder: Why would I pick Ubuntu over Debian, or the other way 'round?

Ubuntu is a Debian-based distribution. The two are very much alike, but their goals are not exactly the same. To understand the differences, you'll want to know the goals of each. And you'll want to know which part of Debian is used as the basis for Ubuntu, and therefore which part of Debian is most similar to Ubuntu.

Debian releases include:
-Unstable (a.k.a. Sid)
-Testing (currently a version called "Squeeze")
-Stable (currently a version called "Lenny")

Ubuntu releases include:
-non-LTS releases (based on Debian Unstable)
-LTS (Long Term Support)* releases (based on Debian Testing)

1. Debian Unstable can change substantially every week. Why not? Sometimes it just breaks, and it's intended for people who don't mind that the software is not ready to be put in a "reliable easy to use" setup. Many users of Unstable are software developers.

2. Ubuntu non-LTS releases take the collection of Debian Unstable software, every six months (except when there's an LTS release). They take the stuff, try to fix as many bugs as possible, and make it "reliable & easy for beginners to use" BUT still based on very up-to-date software.

3. Debian Testing releases take the most-desired software from Debian Unstable software collection once every couple of years, and they make it work pretty reliably for people who are not computer experts. It is also not hard to use, but if you wouldn't know a GNOME from a KDE* from a LXDE, and you don't have any idea how to answer the question "do you want OpenOffice* or Abiword or Crossover Office?" then Ubuntu will probably be easier for you to use. A Debian Testing release comes out at the same time as the most recent testing release becomes a Debian Stable release. This happens "when it's ready"... once every few years.

4. Ubuntu Long Term Support releases come out every two years, and use the collection of programs/software from Debian Testing. These releases are generally easy for beginners to use, and very reliable. Desktop software for these versions of Ubuntu is supported for three years. (that means they get security updates, and there are folks who can help fix software problems that come up).

5. Debian Stable releases do not come with brand-new software, and they are about as reliable and predictable as operating systems get. These releases might support every piece of software you want to use (word processing, web browsing, web-server type stuff) but if you want a lot of new software, Debian Stable probably isn't for you. Each time a release becomes the "Debian Stable release" it is likely to be supported for for three or more years after that.

Step 1:
Make sure you have created a user. For the sake of this example, let's say you called the account username guest. You can give it any temporary password you want. We're going to change that password shortly anyway. I'm assuming you know how to do this already. If you don't, I can assure you that this HowTo is not one you should be following, and you would be very likely to screw up the next step.

Step 2
Next, go to the terminal and type this command:

sudo nano -B /etc/shadow

This will open the /etc/shadow file (the one that contains all the passwords) in a text editor called Nano.

Once you have it open, find the appropriate line for the account in question. It'll look something like this:

guest:$1$2TUdk8Z0$tb2Fn6Idgo8dq9EgYv4xZ0:13721:0:99999:7:::

Change the second part (in bold here) to match this second part (also in bold):

guest:U6aMy0wojraho:13721:0:99999:7:::

Then save the file (Control-X, Y, Enter).

Now you should be able to log into the guest (or whatever you called it) account without entering a password.

Warning: Even though this method is simple (few steps), it is extremely dangerous if you don't know what you're doing. Do not attempt this if you are worried that you might mess up the /etc/shadow file, thus screwing up ur Ubuntu system.

Find Updates for all your Firefox Plug-ins

This is about updating Firefox plug-ins, not Add-ons.

If you select Tools -> Add-ons from the Firefox menu bar, you’ll get a list of all extensions, themes and plug-ins that are currently installed in your copy of Firefox.

The same add-ons dialog has a “Find Updates” feature to help you figure out if you are running any out-dated extensions but that doesn’t work with your plug-ins. How do you then find out that you are running the latest versions of all plug-ins?

It’s simple now. You can open the Firefox browser and visit the Plugins Check page hosted on mozilla.org. This will create a list of all plug-ins that are installed on your system and will match that data with its own list to determine if you are running an older version that has been marked out-of-date.

In case this online check fails for a particular plugin, you can click the “Research” button to perform a search on Google using the plug-in name as the search query. This is not always accurate but you’ll at least reach the vendor’s website that is officially hosting the plug-in.

It makes sense to visit the plug-ins checker page occasionally because older plug-ins not just make your browser insecure but they also make it more unstable. David Tenser of Mozilla says 30% of the reported crashes are caused by old plugins.

Say you just downloaded a 1GB+ ISO onto your system, you know it is around somewhere, but you just can't figure out where it was saved. This little bit of code is a nifty solution for locating the file.

# find / -type f -size +1000M
8. Locate and Identify Recently Altered Files

Do you want a nice list of files that have recently been altered on any given system? If so, enter this tidbit into the terminal:

# find . –mtime -2
9. Find a Past Date

Say you need to find out rather quickly what the date was 49 days ago. To find out, type:

$ date --date='49 days ago'
10. Find a Future Date

In the same vein as the previous example, say you need to find out what the date will be in 49. To find that out, type:

$ date --date='3 seconds'

Note that it's the same as the last bit, only without the word 'ago' added.
11. Locate Files with Specific Words in the Name

If you need to find a file on a system that has a specific name, such as 'passwords' or 'taxes', then you can search a directory with the following code:

# find ~ -name "*passwords*"
12. View Processes Run By Different Users

If you want to see what processes are running for different users that the one logged in, run this:

$ ps U oracle
13. View Items Inside Compressed (Archive) Folder

Have you ever downloaded an archive, only to discover junk inside it? The following command will reveal what is inside a zip folder before you open it.

# unzip -l var-name.zip
14: Eject Removable Media

Where it's an iPod or an SD card, you can eject onboard media by simply typing:

EJECT
15: Save the Active Window as a JPEG

If you need to save the active window on your desktop as a JPEG but don't want to download any special software or use PrntScrn and a photo editor, use this command:

import -window root MyTest.jpg
16: Bump User Off Network

Whether they're doing something that is going to contaminate the network, they're hogging resources, or you simply don't like them, you can log a user off their computer with this handy piece of code:

skill -kill -u username
17. Block a Computer's Access to Specific Websites

Say you're running a business that uses Linux machines, you notice that your employees are spending a ridiculous amount of time checking the weather. You can block their ability to access those sites by opening /etc/hosts with your text editor (sudo gedit /etc/hosts) and adding:

127.0.0.1 website.com
18. Schedule Midnight Downloads

This code is incredibly handy; it allows you to schedule the time for a download to happen--say, at 3PM while you're at work or midnight while you're sleeping.

19. Using the Terminal As Root

Using the Terminal as root is sort of like right-clicking on an application in Vista and choosing 'run as Administrator'. It gives you the ability to do things you otherwise couldn't do (namely, run dangerous code). To use the terminal as root, type:

sudo su
20. Disabling Password Prompt When Using Sudo

Whenever you use the 'sudo' command in Linux, you're prompted to enter the user password before the command will go through. This gets annoying. The solution? Disable it. To do so, use the Terminal and type:

gedit sudo visudo

scroll down to the line that says: username ALL=(ALL) ALL

and change it to say: username ALL=(ALL) NOPASSWD: ALL
21. Change the Default Conky

If you're using a distro that includes Conky by default, such as Crunchbang, you might wander how you can edit its settings. To do this, enter this in the Terminal:

sudo gedit ~/.conkyrc

Of course, replace 'gedit' with the text editor of your choice, and sudo is Ubuntu specific.
22. Put a LiveCD on a USB

Say there's a machine you want to gain access to and copy files from, but you don't have access to the computer's login info. You can gain access with it using a LiveCD. The easiest way to do this is by using a USB thumb drive. You can do this by downloading a liveCD iso and then downloading UNETbootin.

Plug in your USB drive, run UNETbootin, and install the ISO with that.
23. Safely Restart Linux

Lets say you're duped into running a fork bomb, or you download a file that promises to be one thing, only to turn out to be a massive tarbomb. How do you safely restart the frozen system? By doing the following:

Press ALT + PrntScrn and then, while holding those, type the following letters in order: REISUB.
24. View All Files (Including the Hidden Ones)

If you need to view all the files within whatever directory you're in, including ones that are hidden, use the following bit of code:

ls -al
25: A Bonus Tip:

Never run the following:

:() { :|:& };:

...there's something about it that begs to be run; doing so, however, will initiate a forkbomb, which will cause your system to freeze.
